Dates in Doha.

Doha. The perfect place for a date!

Dates are a traditional first meal when the sun sets during Ramadan, and have been a staple food of the Middle East and parts of South Asia for thousands of years.

They are believed to have originated around the Persian Gulf, and have been cultivated since ancient times from Mesopotamia to prehistoric Egypt, possibly as early as 4000 BCE. The Ancient Egyptians used the fruits to be made into date wine, and ate them at harvest. There is archaeological evidence of date cultivation in eastern Arabia in 6000 BCE.

Doha's Fresh Food Market

Doha's Wholesale Market lies oon the junction of Salwa Road and Al Wakra Main Street.

Again you will not find many or maybe any Qatari or Western Faces here!

The hub of shopping for household staff and restaurant suppliers it is a typical fresh food market like you would expect to find anywhere in the World. Two points to note is that once parked you may find another vehicle double parked with you making it a long wait to get out, the other point being the incredibly sticky tarmac that makes walking in flip-flops totally impossible and absolutely hilarious!

On arrival you will probably be approached by a porter with a wheelbarrow who will accompany you around the market collecting your purchases and transporting them to your vehicle.

The market has a vegetable section, a fruit section where you can find a selection of fruit and dates and there is a large area for Water Melons.
Fish can be found in a separate building.

Fish can be cleaned and prepared for you for a small fee by taking it to a separate cleaning area.
